Multiple Formula Approach

Understanding

What Is Ideal Body Weight?

Ideal body weight is a clinical estimate of a healthy target weight based on height and sex. Here's how the formulas work and what they mean.

The Formulas Explained

Devine (1974): Most widely used in clinical medicine, especially for drug dosing. Men: 50 + 2.3 kg per inch over 5 ft. Women: 45.5 + 2.3 kg per inch over 5 ft.

Robinson (1983): A refinement of Devine. Men: 52 + 1.9 kg/in. Women: 49 + 1.7 kg/in.

Miller (1983): Tends toward lower estimates. Men: 56.2 + 1.41 kg/in. Women: 53.1 + 1.36 kg/in.

BMI vs. Ideal Weight

The BMI-based healthy range (18.5–24.9) is often wider than ideal weight formula estimates. Both approaches have merit. Use BMIHero's BMI calculator alongside ideal weight to understand your healthy range. Neither method accounts for muscle mass, so athletes should combine these with body fat percentage measurements.

Common Questions

Ideal Weight FAQ

What is ideal body weight?
Ideal body weight (IBW) is an estimated healthy weight range based on height and sex using clinical formulas (Devine, Robinson, Miller). It's a guideline, not an absolute — it doesn't account for muscle mass or body frame.
Which ideal weight formula is most accurate?
No single formula is universally best. The Devine formula is most used clinically. Most experts recommend looking at the range across multiple formulas alongside BMI (18.5–24.9) for the most complete picture.
Is ideal body weight the same as healthy BMI?
Ideal weight formulas typically correspond to a BMI of 21–25, within the normal WHO range. A muscular person at their ideal weight may have a slightly higher BMI. The two measures complement each other.
How can I reach my ideal weight?
Focus on sustainable habits: 300–500 kcal daily deficit, resistance training to preserve muscle, adequate protein (1.6–2.2 g/kg), regular cardio, quality sleep, and stress management. Avoid crash diets.
Does ideal weight change with age?
Standard formulas don't adjust for age. However, for adults over 65, research suggests a slightly higher weight (BMI 23–27) may be associated with better outcomes due to age-related muscle loss and bone changes.
