Healthy BMI Ranges.

Not all BMIs are equal. Age, sex, muscle mass, and ethnicity all influence what's truly healthy for you. Use our free BMI calculator to check your personal score.

WHO Standard — Adults 20+

The World Health Organization defines a healthy BMI range of 18.5 to 24.9 for adults aged 20 and older. This is the globally recognized standard for the adult BMI calculator:

CategoryBMIRisk
UnderweightBelow 18.5Increased
Normal (Healthy Weight)18.5 – 24.9Lowest
Overweight25 – 29.9Increased
Obese I30 – 34.9High
Obese II35 – 39.9Very High
Obese III40+Extreme

Asian BMI Thresholds

Asian populations tend to have higher body fat at the same BMI. Many Asian countries use lower thresholds, as endorsed by the WHO Western Pacific Region and the International Obesity Task Force:

CategoryBMI
UnderweightBelow 18.5
Normal (Healthy)18.5 – 22.9
Overweight (At Risk)23 – 24.9
Obese25+

BMI by Age: What's Healthy at Every Stage

Body composition changes with age, which affects how BMI should be interpreted:

  • Ages 20–39: BMI 18.5–24.9 is optimal for most adults
  • Ages 40–59: Same range, but natural muscle loss begins — watch waist circumference too
  • Ages 60–79: Some research suggests BMI 25–27 may be protective against bone loss
  • Ages 80+: Preventing unintentional weight loss is often the clinical priority

Healthy BMI for Women vs. Men

The BMI calculator for women and BMI calculator for men use the same formula — but body composition differs significantly between sexes:

  • Women naturally carry 10–12% more body fat than men at the same BMI
  • This higher fat % is biological and essential for hormonal health
  • Men tend to hold more lean muscle mass, which can push BMI higher despite low body fat
  • A female BMI calculator and male BMI calculator produce the same number — but a clinician interprets them differently

Healthy BMI for Athletes

Athletes and muscular individuals often register BMIs in the overweight or obese range despite having very low body fat percentages. For active individuals, waist circumference and body fat percentage — measured via DEXA, calipers, or bioelectrical impedance — are more clinically useful metrics. See our BMI limitations guide for more on when to look beyond BMI.

Ideal Weight by Height

Your ideal weight for your height is the weight range that places your BMI between 18.5 and 24.9. Our free BMI calculator automatically computes this healthy weight range for you after you enter your height and weight. It's a practical target rather than just a number.
