How BMI Works for Men

BMI uses the same formula for men and women, but body composition differences mean the same BMI number can have different health implications for men.

Male BMI Categories

Category BMI (kg/m²)
Underweight < 18.5
Normal Weight 18.5 – 24.9
Overweight 25.0 – 29.9
Obese ≥ 30.0

Why BMI Can Mislead Muscular Men

Men naturally carry more muscle mass than women. Since muscle tissue is denser than fat — weighing approximately 18% more per unit volume — a muscular man can have a BMI in the overweight range while having very low body fat.

A classic example: a professional athlete standing 180cm and weighing 90kg has a BMI of 27.8 (overweight) but may have only 8–12% body fat. Conversely, a sedentary man with the same BMI but little muscle (sometimes called "skinny fat") could have 25%+ body fat.

If you strength train regularly, combine your BMI result with a body fat percentage calculation for a more accurate health assessment.

Common Questions

Male BMI FAQ

What is a healthy BMI for men?
For adult men aged 20+, a healthy BMI is 18.5–24.9 kg/m². Below 18.5 is underweight, 25–29.9 is overweight, and 30+ is obese — the same thresholds as women, though the health implications can differ due to body composition differences.
Is BMI accurate for muscular men?
No — BMI is less reliable for highly muscular men. A bodybuilder or strength athlete with significant muscle mass may score in the overweight range despite very low body fat. Combine BMI with body fat percentage for a more complete picture.
What BMI is obese for a man?
A BMI of 30 or above is classified as obese (Class I: 30–34.9, Class II: 35–39.9, Class III: 40+). Men with BMI over 30 face higher risks of type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and other chronic conditions.
How does age affect BMI for men?
Standard thresholds apply regardless of age. However, men over 65 may have higher body fat at the same BMI due to natural muscle loss. Some evidence suggests BMI 25–27 may be associated with better outcomes for older men.
What should a man weigh at 5'10" (178cm)?
At 178cm, a healthy weight range is approximately 59–79 kg (BMI 18.5–24.9). The Devine ideal weight formula suggests ~72.7 kg (160 lbs). These are starting points — actual optimal weight depends on muscle mass and body composition.
